Opening Night of the Philharmonic Society 2018-19 season features the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale performing an all-Mozart program, including the Litaniae Lauretanae, the joyful concert aria Exsultate, Jubilate, and the charming Coronation Mass.

Long hailed as “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent) and “an expert in 18th-century style” (The New Yorker), Nicholas McGegan is recognized for his probing and revelatory explorations of music of all periods. This season, McGegan enters into his 33rd year as music director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale.

America’s leading historically informed ensemble, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale uses authentic instruments and stylistic conventions of the Baroque to early-Romantic periods. The PBO boasts an extensive discography of more than 40 recordings and launched its own label in 2011, on which it has released nine recordings, including a coveted archival performance of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in Berlioz’s Les Nuits D’été, and a Grammy-nominated recording of Haydn symphonies. The orchestra recently released a recording of its modern North American premiere of Alessandro Scarlatti’s La Gloria di Primavera.
