The 2019 Laguna Beach Music Festival culminates in a passionate musical exploration of romance-themed masterworks. In this pre-Valentine’s Day concert, Festival Artistic Director Joyce Yang is joined by friends and special guests—violin/viola virtuoso Yura Lee, cellist Efe Baltacigil, and world-renowned pianist/composer Conrad Tao—to showcase these nostalgic 20th-century works in duo, trio and quartet combinations.
About the Artists
Blessed with “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post) and a “wondrous sense of color” (San Francisco Classical Voice), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism, and interpretive sensitivity. A Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Yang showcases her colorful musical personality in solo recitals and collaborations with the world’s top orchestras and chamber musicians.
One of today’s most versatile artists, Yura Lee has mastery of both the violin and viola, and actively performs on both instruments. Lee was the only first prize winner awarded across four categories at the 2013 ARD Competition in Germany, and has won top prizes for both violin and viola in numerous competitions, including first prize and audience prize at the 2006 Leopold Mozart Competition in Germany, and first prize at the 2010 UNISA International Competition, among others.
A rising star in the classical music world, Conrad Tao has appeared worldwide as both a pianist and composer. He has earned numerous awards and distinctions, including a YoungArts gold medal in music and an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and being named a Lincoln Center Emerging Artist, a Gilmore Young Artist, and a Presidential Scholar in the Arts by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. Tao has appeared with orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
Currently serving as principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony, Efe Baltacigil recently made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle. Prior to his current appointment, he previously served as the associate principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Baltacigil won the 2005 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and is the recipient of The Peter Jay Sharp Prize and the Washington Performing Arts Society Prize. Baltacigil has performed the Brahms Sextet with Pinchas Zukerman, Midori and Yo-Yo Ma at Carnegie Hall for Isaac Stern’s memorial, and has also participated in Mr. Ma’s Silk Road Project.
