Dvorak: Symphony No. 8

Launching our inaugural Family Concert Series, this free event is designed for listeners of all levels! Whether you are new to classical music or a seasoned listener, deepen your understanding and appreciation of classical music as we explore the orchestra: its formation, history, and traditions through the scope of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony. Enjoy musical demonstrations by special guests and leading experts, and participate in an open forum Q&A.

The orchestra has been around since the year 1600, but it has changed dramatically over the centuries. In this 75 minute program, host Nuvi Mehta will take our audience on an exploration of the modern orchestra as we know it, discussing topics such as: What is an orchestra; The musical families of the orchestra; What gave rise to the modern symphony orchestra as we know it. The program will conclude with a rousing performance of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony by our very own Orange County Youth Symphony.

Founded in 1970, the Orange County Youth Symphony is the official youth orchestra of Orange County. The diverse roster represents student musicians from nearly 50 high school and college programs from San Clemente to Fullerton and beyond. The Orange County Youth Symphony community of young musicians and their families is particularly committed to advancing and sharing the intercultural love of orchestral music. They serve as music ambassadors to each other and to the local schools, districts, and cities. With the support of a small staff and board, the orchestra is energetically led by the music director and conductor, Johannes Müller Stosch.

Nuvi Mehta joined the Ventura Music Festival in 2004 as Artistic Director, and was formerly conductor for the International Russian Music Piano Competition, as well as Music Director of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra and the Nova Vista Symphony. Mr. Mehta has also been Assistant Conductor and Director of Outreach Programs with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and he served as apprentice conductor with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Nuvi Mehta has also hosted San Diego Symphony appearances on XLNC 104.9FM and KPBS 89.5FM, and serves the San Diego Symphony as pre-concert lecturer, multi-media presenter and community outreach resource.
